It is an honour to be from and represent Six Nations as we have a great legacy of musicians who come from our community including Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Robbie Robertson and JUNO Winning Rock Icon Derek Miller. What’s it like being a musician in Six Nations? This is why I choose to release the album on Truth & Reconciliation Day. One of the songs I wrote is called “Honour Song” which is dedicated to the Residential School children. I am very proud and excited to release the new music. It was awesome to challenge myself to be as creative as I have ever been with lyrics, tempo, arrangement, vocal phrasing, and delivery. I feel like this is the best work I have done and is the most vulnerable and real work I have done to date.
We worked on writing the songs together and did a lot of pre-production to get the songs right. I worked with Justin Abedin, formerly of Jacksoul to help me co-write and produce the new album.
I was inspired by Chris Cornell for the first single “Open Doors” and used that as a blueprint for the rest of the album. I used a very different approach than all of my past albums. This album was a year and a half in the making. Tell us about the process of writing and recording “My Last Breath.” I got to perform at Ritchie Valens NAMA Hall of Fame Induction and sang vocals on a song used at the closing ceremonies of The 2015 PanAm Games. I have hit the USA Billboard Top 40 and have been featured on CBC, Global TV, Much Music, Showcase, and more. I am an award-winning artist who has shared the stage with many of my heroes including Robbie Robertson, Jonny Lang, Sam Moore, and Jeff Healey. I moved to Toronto at a young age to be mentored by Canada’s Queen of Jazz Salome Bey and performed in her theatre production called Rainboworld which launched the careers of Deborah Cox, Sate, Orin Isaacs, and more.
